Heavy rain, aging flood system leave South Florida farmlands swamped | Miami Herald

Heavy rain, aging flood system leave South Florida farmlands swamped | Miami Herald: After being crippled earlier this year by an outbreak of an exotic fruit fly, South Florida farmers are struggling with a new scourge: flooding.

Heavy rain and the region’s aging flood control system — in one case, a generator had to be hauled out to a remote canal gate — swamped swaths of farmland growing bean, tomato, squash and other winter crops. At least 60 farmers say they lost between 40 and 100 percent of their crops, said county agricultural manager Charles LaPradd.

Cropland values likely to be Under Pressure in 2016 | Hoosier Ag Today: Although cropland values in Ohio have increased in recent years, low projected profit margins next year will likely restrict land values from increasing in 2016 and may cause land values to decrease, an agricultural economist from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciencesat The Ohio State University said.

Ohio cropland values rose 3.5 percent in 2015, with bare cropland averaging $5,850 an acre, said Barry Ward, production business management leader for Ohio State University Extension. OSU Extension is the outreach arm of the college.

Carbon Farming May Figure in Climate Mitigation

Carbon Farming May F... | Crops News | Agriculture: Due to an initiative launched by France, there is now an international framework that for the first time brings agricultural soils into climate negotiations. Called “4 per 1,000,” this new proposal aims to protect and increase carbon stocks in soil.
The initiative, signed this week by 25 countries including France, Germany, the U.K., Mexico, and Australia, as well as 75 research and NGO partners, is aimed at combatting climate change by recognizing the ability of soil to act as a sink for greenhouse-gas emissions. The U.S. was not a signatory to the agreement, which occurred parallel to the main climate negotiations.
The “4 per 1,000,” which refers to a voluntary pledge of a 0.4% annual growth rate in soil carbon content, “is a game changer,” said Andre Leu, who signed on behalf of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM). “I’ve been engaged with climate negotiations since Copenhagen, and until now we couldn’t even get the word agriculture in the agreements.”

The costs of Peru’s farming boom

The costs of Peru’s farming boom: The fight began early one morning on a sandy dirt road between fields of lima beans, where farmers discovered an excavator machine digging a trench for a water pipe. Infuriated that the pipe would carry water pumped from beneath their farms, a crowd gathered and drove away the crew of workers in a fit of shouts.

Then the protesters set fire to the plastic pipes, leaving them charred and warped on the side of the road.

As tensions rose in the days after that confrontation, threats flew between the protesters and a group of men sent by the company that was laying the pipes. Some of the men wielded wooden clubs, a machete and a baseball bat. Some of the protesters faced criminal charges.

In this feud over water, small farmers in the Peruvian town of Ocucaje are trying to challenge what they view as a water grab by a company that exports grapes and asparagus. It’s a type of conflict on the rise in parts of the world where groundwater is overexploited and in decline. And in southern Peru, disputes over water have grown especially bitter as some big farms have bought up wells and started piping water to fields miles away.
