A New Kind Of Irrigation Could Boost African Farming--And It's Powered By The Sun

A New Kind Of Irrigation Could Boost African Farming--And It's Powered By The Sun: Pioneered in Israel, drip irrigation saves water and fertilizer by delivering droplets of water to the base of plants. But off-the-grid farmers aren't able to use the technology without expensive diesel generators.

Solar power is the obvious solution. And, as SunCulture, in Nairobi, Kenya, is proving, that doesn't have to be expensive for farmers. The startup, founded by NYU graduate Samir Ibrahim his friend Charlie Nichols, sells affordable solar-powered irrigation products and a one-stop-shop of services to farmers in Kenya.

Man finds success in farming after failures - Society - VietNam News

Man finds success in farming after failures - Society - VietNam News: There are many ways to win in life, and not necessarily with a university diploma. Nguyen Tien Dung is among a few young people in Huong Son district of central Ha Tinh province who has proved it.
The 24-year-old man received the prestigious Luong Dinh Cua Award in July this year, organised by Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union which is presented to young farmers who have made outstanding contributions to agricultural production and rural development.

Dung was honoured because he was the first person in the region to develop successfully a large red-meat dragon fruit farm. His farm is also the biggest in the province, said Cao Van Duc, deputy chairman of People's Committee of Son Tay commune (where Dung lives).

"I hope he will inspire many other young people to courageously find their own way and work hard with passion to develop the homeland," Duc said.

Can Rich and Poor Live Side by Side? Not in Many Places

Can Rich and Poor Live Side by Side? Not in Many Places: It’s still possible in Boston for a mail carrier, an accountant and a Harvard-trained psychiatrist — basically, the crowd from “Cheers” — to live as neighbors.

That finding by the real estate brokerage Redfin makes the capital of Massachusetts a rarity at a time when neighborhoods in most U.S. cities are increasingly isolated from each other by income and home values.

Top college grads choose Silicon Valley over New York City | Crain's New York Business

Top college grads choose Silicon Valley over New York City | Crain's New York Business: Silicon Valley has long trumped New York in the quest for venture-capital dollars, as well as in the number and size of its tech startups. European Union Captures Dairy Market Share from U.S. | Agweb.com

European Union Captures Dairy Market Share from U.S. | Agweb.com: Following 2014’s record-large year-over-year increase in milk production, the European Union is expected to add an additional 1.1 percent in total output this year, according to USDA. The trading bloc’s extra milk has come at a time when the world’s largest producer of cheese has been locked out of its biggest market—Russia.
