Book on soul food restaurants rooted in Memphis inspiration: When Chicago's Dave Hoekstra started interviews for his new book about soul food restaurants, his first stop was Memphis.
"When you're writing about soul food, where better to start?" he asked.
Hoekstra's book, "The People's Place: Soul Food Restaurants and Reminiscences From the Civil Rights Era to Today" (Chicago Review Press; $29.95), was published Thursday and features two Memphis places, The Four Way and Alcenia's. The day before it came out, he had lunch at Four Way with owner Willie Bates, stopping by on his way to start his book tour in New Orleans.
